While some produce and nut operations receive their raw ingredients cased and palletized, the vast majority receive them from contracted growers during harvest. Keeping track of growers, fields, lots and inventory during harvest is one of the biggest challenges these operations face each year.
We’re constantly talking with food and beverage manufacturers, and visit well over 100 facilities each year. One thing we’ve learned is that a great deal of inventory variance starts at receiving, often due to traditional inventory management methods being unable to handle the volume of goods received. Tools within ParityFactory are designed specifically to help address these challenges, along with some recommended best practices.
PF Grower Receiving was built to expedite receiving from growers, while ensuring the accuracy of the received inventory. During harvest the first goal is to ensure trucks don’t back up—team members are working clipboards and writing on bins, totes or lugs. Truck scales are weighing in and capturing tare out, and often this is being recorded on paper to be married up later.
PF Grower Receiving integrates with the truck scale to automatically capture the gross weight of the truck in. When it’s offloaded into bins, our system captures the number of bins and tags them with barcoded Lot labels—and each Lot is tied to the necessary meta-data including grower, field, variety and so on. When the truck heads out, the scale catches the tare-weight which goes directly into our system. From there, PF Grower Receiving automatically distributes an average weight across the bins based on how many were used.
What are the outcomes? A much faster receiving process. Real-time, accurate inventory. Error reduction via the elimination of manual data entry. And lastly a much more efficient process.
At this point, the operation is starting with accurate inventory which is the first step to the final goal: Finished Goods inventory that the sales team can trust and sell against, without doing physical counts.
